The calculator finds when the Moon's altitude crosses a standard apparent horizon at the coordinates you chose. Clocks are in that place's time zone, with UTC under them. The page does not invent a city from your IP.

These times are estimates for learning and curiosity. They are not an observatory ephemeris, and they are not a guide for navigation or aviation.

How this is calculated

The same low-precision Moon longitudes used for phase are joined to latitude and distance terms, then converted to right ascension and declination. Sidereal time and the observer's longitude give the hour angle. Rise and set are the crossings of an apparent horizon that includes mean refraction and lunar parallax. A public New York check for 13 September 2026 lands near 9:18 a.m. and 8:04 p.m. Eastern Time in this model.

Questions

Why might this differ from a city almanac?

A published table uses a fuller lunar theory, a precise station, and local horizon height. This page uses fewer terms and a geometric horizon. A difference of several minutes is ordinary. Hills and buildings are not in the model.

Does the page know I am in New York?

Only if you pick New York or type those coordinates. The device clock can say Europe/Warsaw while this tool still uses America/New_York for the horizon.

What does “use this device's coordinates” send?

Nothing leaves the browser. The coordinates stay in this page and in local storage on this device, so the last place can be reused.

Does this give azimuth or moonrise compass bearing?

No. The calculator stops at clock times and an approximate distance.
